The kingdom of heaven is like…

Today we explored the kingdom of heaven, responding to the lectionary reading which featured six of Jesus’ kingdom parables. Each of them were about ordinary things, seemingly unrelated to one another, but with the kingdom as the one common feature.

We started by asking where the kingdom of heaven was, using a map of the Earth. First Berrigan pointed to North Korea (the country in which Christianity is most persecuted), and then Chelsea said, “It’s all around us, but we usually can’t see it because we’re not paying attention.” Profound wisdom from the kids!

Then after exploring the passage, we went for a walk around the block to look for the ordinary signs of the kingdom, and find some updated parables in our local area, by completing the sentence, “The kingdom of heaven is like…” Here are a few of them:

  • The kingdom of heaven is like roadworks – whether you’re on a side street or a main road, it slows you down, and disrupts what you’re doing.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like a recycling bin – God takes our rubbish and turns it into something beautiful and useful.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like shoes with wheels, it rolls along beside you.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like junk mail in a letterbox with a no junk mail sign…it pops up whether you want it or not!
  • The kingdom of heaven is like a farmers’ market – it’s built on relationships and local goodness.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like a rose bud – it starts small, but spreads out.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like fruit – it’s the real thing, not refined sugars.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like the sun poking through the clouds – it’s always there, even if you can’t see it.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like bees – making pollinating and fertilising connections.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like lichen – healthiest when things are clean.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like a tram, inviting everyone to get on board.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like the joy of a 3 year old seeing a digger.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like weeds growing between the cracks in concrete.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like buds on the trees – signs of God’s new life.
